The Carmel Christkindlmarkt opens Saturday, Nov. 21 and closes at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 24. The rink in the middle of it stays open until Jan. 31, 2027. The lights along the Monon run a week past the market. The free trolley stops five days before the market closes. That makes four schedules sharing the same patch of ground, each with its own end date, and for the 38 days after Christmas Eve the rink has Carter Green to itself.
Here is what's on Carter Green and the Monon this winter, and when each part shuts down.
| What | Opens | Closes | Days it runs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carmel Christkindlmarkt | Nov. 21 | Dec. 24, 4 p.m. | Wed. through Sun.; also Mon. and Tue., Dec. 21–22 |
| Magnificent Monon lights | Nov. 21 | Dec. 31 | Daily |
| Carmel Holiday Trolley | Nov. 21 | Dec. 19 | Fridays and Saturdays only |
| The Ice at Carter Green | Nov. 21 | Jan. 31, 2027 | Wed. through Sun. in Nov. and Dec.; Thu. through Sun. in Jan. |
The market's regular hours are Wednesday and Thursday 4 to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday noon to 9 p.m., and Sunday noon to 8 p.m. It's closed Mondays and Tuesdays until the last week. On Wednesday, Nov. 25 it opens at noon, and it's closed on Thanksgiving. During the final stretch it opens at noon on Monday, Dec. 21, Tuesday, Dec. 22, and Wednesday, Dec. 23, then closes at 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Admission is free.
The Magnificent Monon light display covers the greenway from Carter Green to Main Street. Visit Hamilton County lists it as free and running daily through Dec. 31, with no posted hours. That means that from Dec. 25 to Dec. 31, the Monon is still lit and the rink is still open, but the market booths are gone.
The two free ride options never overlap fully. According to the market's 2026 transportation guide, the Carmel Holiday Trolley runs Fridays from 5 to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 9 p.m. between Nov. 21 and Dec. 19. Its stops include the Arts & Design District, Carmel City Center, the Indiana Design Center, Civic Square, and the market. The free weekend shuttle runs only on Saturdays and Sundays when the market is open, about every 15 minutes, from the shuttle lot at 550 College Drive.
Here's what that looks like day by day:
| Market day | Holiday Trolley | Weekend shuttle |
|---|---|---|
| Wednesday | No | No |
| Thursday | No | No |
| Friday | 5–9 p.m. | No |
| Saturday | 2–9 p.m. | Yes |
| Sunday | No | Yes |
Saturday is the only day both services run. On Fridays the market opens at noon, but the trolley doesn't start until 5. Sundays have the shuttle and no trolley. Once Dec. 19 passes, the trolley is finished for the year, even though the market has five more days to go. Accessibility splits the same way. The market notes that the shuttle is accessible and the trolley is not. Accessible parking for vehicles with qualifying tags or plates is at the Tarkington Garage on 3rd Avenue SW.
The market suggests having ride-share drivers drop off near the northwest corner on 3rd Avenue. It also says this isn't an official drop-off point and gets very congested on weekends. Range Line Road has its own complication right now. In its Oct. 9 newsletter, the city reported northbound construction between Executive Drive and City Center Drive, with lane restrictions and businesses still open. No end date was given.
On Wednesdays and Thursdays, which have neither ride option, the market's plan relies on parking that's free everywhere in Carmel and a walk along the lit greenway. These are the garages the market lists, with its own distance and walk-time estimates:
The market says these garages save time compared with hunting for surface parking closer in. Because the Monon lights run from Carter Green north to Main Street, the walk from either Midtown garage or Sophia Square follows the lit stretch the whole way. Carmel Bike Share is another option. It has docks at Midtown Plaza, 365 Monon Boulevard, at Main Street and the Monon in front of Bazbeaux Pizza, and on the Monon Greenway east of 3 Carter Green, and bikes unlock through the Movatic app.
The market's own crowd-timing guide, published in July, is direct about it. Weekends, and December weekend evenings most of all, draw the biggest crowds. Weekdays are usually calmer, and Wednesday and Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. is usually the least busy window. The guide also says early-season visits and rainy days are often quieter, that weekday skating is less crowded, and that reserving rink tickets ahead is a good idea.
Compare that with the transportation tables and you'll see the quietest market hours fall on the days with no trolley and no shuttle. A Wednesday at 4 p.m. means a free garage and a walk of 6 to 15 minutes. December weekends get the most transit support and, by the market's own account, the most people.
A few things are new at the booths this year, which is reason enough to go early in the season:
One event is already full. Wundernacht, the ticketed preview and fundraiser for adults 21 and over, is on Thursday, Nov. 19, two days before opening. General admission is $100 and VIP is $200, and the market's page lists both as sold out. The public opening ceremony and tree lighting are both on Nov. 21.
When the market closes at 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve, the rink closes at the same time, since its Dec. 24 hours are 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. It's closed Christmas Day, like the market. From Dec. 26 through Dec. 31 it keeps its regular December hours: Wednesday and Thursday 4 to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. For that week, the Monon is still lit and the ice is still open, but the booths and their crowds are gone.
In January, the City of Carmel's rink calendar cuts the schedule back:
So in January, Wednesday skating ends, Friday daytime hours go away, and Sunday closes an hour earlier. The rink is open four days a week until Sunday, Jan. 31. That's more than five weeks after the market closes.
Expect to pay about $10 to $11 for a skate session for adults and youth 11 and older, and $8 to $9 for children 10 and under. The rink's FAQ and About pages list different admission prices, so check the ticket page before you go. Both pages put skate rental at $4.
January has events of its own, too. The rink's events page lists the Festival of Ice on Jan. 15 and 16 and the Carmel Winter Games on Jan. 23 under its 2027 heading. The page also says dates and times may change, and parts of it haven't been updated in a while, so confirm closer to the date. The rink posts weather updates and theme nights through the city's Experience Carmel social accounts.
From Nov. 21 to Dec. 24, Carter Green's calendar is set by the market. From Dec. 26 to Jan. 31, it's set by the rink alone, in the same spot with fewer hours and no market booths around it. The market's guide already points to weekday skating as the less crowded option, and in January the earliest weekday session starts Thursday at 4 p.m.
